SORG TMJ masterclass course
Date: April 24 – 25, 2026 I Riffa, Bahrain
Two-day masterclass workshop on human anatomical specimens focused on TMJ replacement
Faculty of experienced national and international speakers
Course Chairman Mohammed A. Al-Muharraqi, Manama, Bahrain
Course concept
This high-impact masterclass is specifically designed for experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons seeking comprehensive, hands-on exposure to contemporary custom-made TMJ reconstruction. The course combines state-of-the-art digital planning, biomedical engineering collaboration, and supervised cadaveric surgery in a structured, immersive learning environment.
The workshop will be conducted on fresh frozen human anatomical specimens, ensuring the highest level of anatomical fidelity and surgical realism. Participants will engage directly with biomedical engineers to undertake the complete digital workflow, including virtual planning, prosthesis design, and case-specific customization of the TMJ system. This unique surgeon-engineer interaction allows candidates to understand not only how to implant the prosthesis, but why design decisions are made for optimal biomechanical and functional outcomes.
Following the planning phase, participants will proceed to full surgical implantation of the custom 3D-printed TMJ prostheses. Under the close supervision of internationally renowned TMJ surgeons, candidates will perform each critical step of the procedure, including surgical exposure, fossa and mandibular preparation, prosthesis positioning, fixation techniques, occlusal considerations, and intra-operative troubleshooting. Faculty-led discussions will focus on indications, patient selection, complication avoidance, and long-term outcome.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the indications, patient selection criteria, and contraindications for total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJ TJR), including primary, complex, and revision cases.
- Apply contemporary digital planning principles in collaboration with biomedical engineers to design custom-made TMJ prostheses using the KLS Martin IPS TMJ TJR system.
- Demonstrate detailed anatomical knowledge of the TMJ region and adjacent neurovascular structures relevant to safe surgical exposure and implantation.
- Perform the complete surgical workflow for TMJ total joint replacement on fresh frozen cadavers, including fossa and mandibular component placement, fixation strategies, and occlusal management.
- Recognize and manage intra-operative challenges and complications, incorporating evidence-based strategies to optimize surgical accuracy, stability, and long-term outcomes.
